I do agree of what you have wrote here. I think Kutcher's move isn't that sincere about helping the people of Africa. He could've just give the nets without this popularity stints of following him on twitter, just a bad idea in my opinion.

Thanks for this article. I know you wrote it some time ago, but I'd never heard of this before. As others have said, he should have just sent the mosquito nets with out any conditions. There aren't many good celebrity role models any more. The only two I can think of are Angelina Jolie and George Clooney.

ha, yeah I remember when this whole thing broke out and further thrusted Twitter into mainstream consciousness. I remeber thinking at the time that it was morally dubious for Ashton to exploit an epidemic for his personal gain; however, as has been commented, I think the ends justify the means in this case. Had he not done anything or if he had simply donated the nets without the media hoopla then he would not have cast the national media spotlight on the issue. Not to be outdone, CNN's hand would also be forced to do a similarly charitable thing, which it did by also donating nets.

If he makes money by being who is, then let it be like that. He should not drag the helpless and needy people of Africa into it. The fact that others are doing similar things does not justify his move. After all, there are many others who are doing charity work in Africa without pushing in the element of self.

Sorry to spot this so late but I had to state my opinion.

An interesting point but I think its futile and irrelevant to bemoan Ashton's motivations. He is a celebrity and thus first and foremost: a brand. How different is what he is doing to Proctor and Gamble donating 5c to improving hygeine for girls in Africa for every packet purchased of a particular brand of sanitary towels? One can argue that all they are trying to do is gain publicity for their product over that of their competition. Which is true. I mean why don't they simply donate instead of holding me and my cash and my tastes hostage: Buy this brand and help girls in Africa. But can also argue that they HAVE a social responsibility. At the heart of corporate social responsibility is making a difference and ofcourse making it known to your clients/customers/patrons/shareholders that this is what you are doing so they can be proud to be associated with you and your brand which inevitable gets more recognition and value. That is the nature of business. How is this different from what Ashton is doing? This man, like any other celebrity makes money simply by being who he is. I don't mean to say this is wrong or right. But I mean to raise awareness to the inescapable fact that he is a business and a brand in and of himself. Just saying.

If he wins he should provide them regardless as a show of good faith and because it is the right thing to do.
