I think there are a lot of option from pc to phone services. I think skype has gone too far of charging calls. Skype is actually good for pc to pc call and absolutely free. Hope you can find some other means to acquire a much cheaper cost of phone service.

Is this the case for all of Africa? Its interesting because you are right, Skypee is supposed to have lower rates and they should not be raising them 100%.

Hello Clement. I agree that Skype is overpriced and definitely overrated. I find the call quality to be mediocre….at best. But it is still cheaper than using the phone company.

However, I live in the developing country of Belize, where the government owns the telephone and internet company so they actually BLOCK Skype! Yes, I know it is hard to believe that a country in the western so called “free” world could do that, but it is very true.

The only way anybody in Belize can use Skype or any other VOIP is to enable a Virtual Private Network or VPN such as Witopia. This further reduces the call quality.

Anyhow, I guess my point is that yes Skype is expensive, but at least your government allows you to use it!

You can use the services suggested in this post. Their rates are relatively lower for calls to all Sub-Saharan African countries.

Our family has noticed that Skype has been getting more and more expensive since we make international calls our first alternative was Skype back in the day as it was the cheapest solution…. but you are right.. it is strange that the prices have gone up over time and not down… Well I guess its time to find a better alternative than Skype! Surprisingly Vonage is actually looking really good right now to us.

I personally think Skype is the first choice to make free PC-to-PC calls yet their recent price hike for PC to landlines and mobile numbers is very unfortunate. I hope they will reconsider their decision. Anyway Gizmo and Nonoh or Fring are also worth a try. It just takes time for us to switch from something we’re getting used to for so long. Thanks for sharing.
